Delaware---"Well...we kinda face north and real subtle-like, turn left..."

We were up at the crack of dawn and so was Ronnie, as he usually heads to their country store for the first part of the day. Ina had yogurt for us, along with granola and some frozen local blackberries. Such dear people. Laura and I headed back towards Highway 13 and then south while Karen tried one of Ronnie's espressos. Thank you both, so very much for your warm hospitality.

I have been a little surprised by the amount of traffic on these roads. When I did my routing, these towns seemed pretty small...I did not expect the number of cars and trucks we have seen. That said, the shoulders here in Delaware are as wide as the traffic lane.

We had a nice tailwind the first 17 miles, and then when we turned east, the wind was a cross/headwind. Bleah...this is killin' my average. We rode through Millsboro and Dagsboro and came to Bethany Beach. Wow...million dollar beach homes. This is the first place we have been to where we have seen people out exercising...jogging, riding bikes...it was great to see. We rode across a very cool suspension bridge and got our first glimpse of the Atlantic Ocean. It felt odd getting to the beach on flat roads...where is the coastal range...the cliffs of the west coast? Highway 1 is a designated bike route in Delaware and was pleasant riding even with all of the traffic.

When we got to Dewey Beach we turned inland and away from that nasty headwind. The last part of the day was the best...a little highway...15...that passed a couple of ponds that were idyllic. By the way, we have passed sooooooo many acres of corn, but so far, the corn here looks the best. We actually ended the day not far from where we started.
The weather has been kind. Today was cloudy and in the mid 70's...perfect riding weather, eh? I have thought a few times that I could just as easily be riding this in triple digit weather at this time of year...I am thankful.
My stats for the day were: 101.2 miles, an average of 14.2, and an elevation gain of 441'.
We loaded up and headed north to New Jersey where we are staying with Lauren. Lauren is an environmental engineer and she was a great guide and resource for the historical places around Woodstown, New Jersey. She volunteers for the Frederick Simeone Foundation. If you don't know who that is...check him out...it is pretty amazing. She and her friend Keith knew we were craving pizza and took us to a great local spot...Ci...Ci...can't remember. Lord, I'm lucky to remember my name these days, let alone the day of the week or where I'm at. Ci...Ci...Cindi...phew!
maybe you can't...because you won't...

  2. My friend,

you hit those roads during the beach traffic time. They get heavy traffic on nice weekends so it was probably folks coming and going for a beautiful weather weekend.

sorry you did not find the coastal hills you are used to seeing. I know you LOVE those West Coast hills.

you took me up plenty of them in 2006.

Joe says they have a pro cycling Governor that helps with good roads.
